Sound propagation in an outdoor environment is influenced by the state of the atmosphere: the heterogeneous distribution of temperature and atmospheric movements (mean wind, turbulence) during propagation can lead to significant variations in sound levels as soon as the distance between the source(s) and a receiver exceeds a hundred metres.
To study and characterise these effects, the UMRAE has a range of meteorological measurement equipment, deployed in the field at the same time as acoustic measurements during experimental campaigns carried out as part of research projects.
- Measurements of vertical profiles of wind speed and direction: 1 Lidar ZX300 anemometer, 2 10m weather masts equipped with Young anemometers/wind vanes, 9 3D ultrasonic anemometers (4 Young 81000, 1 Campbell CSAT3, 3 METEK, 1 Gill Windmaster)
- Measurements of vertical air temperature profiles: 2 10m weather masts, 1 5m pneumatic mast, 1 25m military mast, 1 Innovadrone G410 Special drone
- Air and thermal turbulence measurements: 9 3D ultrasonic anemometers (see details above)
- Measurement of standard meteorological parameters: 1 Vaisala WTX530 weather station, 1 Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station
